What is Emotionally Focused Counselling & Therapy?
An Emotionally Focused Counsellor is someone who can help you achieve your personal or couple’s goals in a systematic way. The process might help to solve problems, gain insight and understanding, develop skills and make practical changes that can assist.
Counselling can also help with personal and deeper issues with a range of carefully selected techniques designed to help you identify and release emotional blocks, and indentify patterns in behaviour that may at times be unhelpful.
Therapy, on the other hand, offers a deeper healing process that uses the insight gained through counselling to make changes to the underlying causes. This involves healing processes and deeper releasing of emotional blocks, as well as healing of the need to act or be a particular way.
Both counselling and therapy can help with all emotional issues, such as anxiety, fear, anger depression, over reactiveness, in all situations. Such issues might show themselves in addictions, relationship issues, emotional feelings and mood, and general attitude and personality.
Emotionally Focused Counselling and Therapy understands that at the core of people’s mental wellbeing is the relative balance between being able to live and express freely versus being blocked and traumatised by life’s events and past and present relationships. It is the denied emotional reactions primary to the human experience that create the conditions for anxiety and depression. This usually occurs because of unhealthy relationships in either or both the present and past.
Emotionally Focused Counselling and Therapy involves awareness raising and then releasing of the blockages in order to feel and be free. Techniques and interventions might include counselling, reflecting, exploration, focusing, visualising, drawing, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), self discovery, hypnotherapy, regression, inner-child work, empty-chair work, healing, holding, and expressive techniques.
